The Toronto Maple Leafs have been relatively quiet in the free agent market this year, but that doesn't mean they're done for the offseason. With a few key signings already made, including star goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, the team could look to some familiar faces to bolster their roster. Here are three potential reunions that the Maple Leafs should consider: Michael Bunting, John Klingberg, and James Reimer.
Michael Bunting is a winger who had his best seasons with the Leafs, scoring 23 goals in back-to-back years. Since then, he's maintained an average of 17 goals and 40 points per year with other teams. Bunting was effective playing in the Maple Leafs' top six, including with Auston Matthews, who won the Hart Trophy in 2021-22. Reuniting Bunting with Matthews could bring out the best in both players and wreak havoc on opponents.
John Klingberg, a star defenseman, had a disappointing first go-around with the Leafs, spending most of his time on the injured reserve. However, he showed last season with the San Jose Sharks that he still has some game left in him, recording double digits in goals and 27 points in 56 games. With the new Leafs regime preferring puck-moving defensemen, Klingberg deserves another chance to show what he can provide the team on a one-year deal.
James Reimer, a veteran goaltender, was brought back on a professional tryout last year, but was eventually let go when the team acquired Cayden Primeau. However, with the Leafs dealing away Joseph Woll and Dennis Hildeby this offseason, they're now in need of goaltending depth. Reimer showed last season that he wasn't done yet, amassing a solid 7-4-2 record with a 2.42 GAA in 14 games with the Ottawa Senators. As a result, the Maple Leafs could use some valuable veteran depth, and Reimer would fit the bill, especially with Bobrovsky and Anthony Stolarz getting older and Stolarz's injury history.
In my opinion, these three reunions could be beneficial for the Maple Leafs. Michael Bunting and John Klingberg both have a history with the team and could bring out the best in their respective positions. James Reimer, on the other hand, could provide much-needed goaltending depth and give the team a veteran presence. While these signings may not be the most glamorous, they could be the key to a successful season for the Maple Leafs.
